about me

Almost all of my sound pieces are created by processing and reprocessing a single, very small snippet of digital sound.

In the course of repeatedly applying simple transformations to the material, unexpected qualities - emergent properties - begin to appear in it. The music devises itself.

I trained as a philosopher, and for a lot of the time I work as a visual artist. I don't think like a musician.

Most musicians, I imagine, would feel some sort of responsibility for 'writing' or 'playing' the music. I'm happy to let the machines get on with it - though I do usually lend them a hand with the editing and mixing.

And yes, my work can be quite repetitive. For some listeners this will be the musical equivalent of watching paint dry. Very little happens, and change can sometimes be so gradual that you wonder if actually you're just imagining it.

But hey, isn't that the way the world goes?
